Tips for Improving Your Problem-Solving Skills

Tips to improving your problem solving skills

For many, the ability to solve problems is an essential part of your day-to-day job, but how high would you rank this soft skill in a sense of importance?

Despite being categorised as a 'soft skill', according to a recent survey released by SEEK, problem solving is one of the most sought-after skills among Australian employers surveyed.

So how can you improve your problem-solving skills, since it is such a valued trait?

Here, you can find out top tips…

Frequently ask, “Why?”

Solving a problem begins with understanding it. In order to do this, you should ask yourself, "why did this problem arise?" Once you have an answer, keep questioning yourself "why" to determine the underlying cause/s.

Be solution-focused

Focusing too much on a problem limits the brain's ability to find solutions. When you focus too much on a problem, negative emotions are triggered. Potential solutions are hindered by these emotions. In order to move forward, one needs to acknowledge the problem and then embrace a solution-oriented mindset.

Analyze the problem visually

In some situations, illustrations can be helpful for solving problems. By creating a simple visual representation of the process or situation you need to fix, you can better understand it. Using a whiteboard, a classic piece of paper, or computer software like PowerPoint or Canva can all help you understand a complicated problem.

Make a list of all possible solutions and choose the best one

Try coming up with as many solutions as you can. Once you have a list of potential solutions, narrow down your choices. Group similar ideas together if you have a long list. Consider each of the solutions and which one will provide you with the best outcome.
Getting feedback from relevant team members or managers will also help you make the best decision.

Remember to follow through

It is important to note that even when the solution for a problem has been identified, there is still a lot of work to be done. Developing and implementing an action plan, monitoring progress, and making any necessary adjustments are all critical factors that problem solvers should consider.

Always be willing to learn

You can always improve, no matter how accomplished you are. Learn from past mistakes and don't be scared to ask for assistance or advice from co-workers or managers.

Put Your Brain to Work with Puzzles and Brain Teasers

Doing puzzles and playing games like chess and Sudoku will help you develop problem-solving strategies and techniques that will be useful in real-life situations. So pick up a game and get that brain to work!
